Equitable Economic Development

Economic development should enhance quality of life for all citizens. The City has a critical role to play in creating opportunities and providing pathways for growth regardless of one’s zip code. That means working to close the gaps in access to wealth, education, housing, transportation, recreation, and social capital. Equity must be baked into city ordinances, policies, and day to day practices.

Urban renewal is not about kicking out the poor folks in the name of progress. It’s about eliminating barriers by making housing affordable for young professionals, seniors on a fixed income, and everyone in between. We must prevent overdevelopment and grow smartly and intentionally.

Tourism is a valuable part of Charleston. We must maintain and enhance the spirit of the city or there won’t be any reason to come here. We are not a generic city. Our Charleston is rich with culture. Such culture must be reflective in our business, our way of life, and how we operate.

As Mayor, I will:

  • Re-establish the Office of Economic Development

  • Create a minority owned bank

  • Establish a robust diversity, equity and inclusion office

  • Foster a diverse business community that truly elevates businesses owned by Black, Brown and Indigenous people

  • Create a small business investment company

  • Facilitate adaptive reuse of vacant buildings
